How to cool down naturally in summer

I’m sure you know the feeling. The heat creeps up. Your patience creeps down.

How to cool down naturally in summerCortisol goes up. Your sleep’s disturbed. And so everything seems worse the next day.

Still, at least you know it’s not just you being difficult 🙂 It’s your biology having a moment.

The good news, is that nature cools us down by lowering our physiological response to heat stress.

Through natural shade, the calming sensory inputs of birdsong and water, and grounding soil contact, nature actively reduces cortisol levels and stabilises our nervous system during hot weather

How can nature help me to keep cool?

Here are ten simple ways to use nature to stay cooler, calmer, and a bit more like yourself this summer.

1. Being near water calms you down

A river, a lake, even a paddling pool in the garden. Being near water drops your heart rate almost instantly. There’s something in us that relaxes near it. Some call it blue mind theory, the scientifically proven mildly meditative state the brain enters near water.

2. Walking under trees lowers your stress

Tree canopy cover, creates cool microclimates that can drop local temperatures by up to 10°F. Shade plus a light breeze through leaves does more for your body than you’d think. Your nervous system settles down too. Less glare, less squinting, less low level stress.

3. Get your feet on the grass

Bare feet on cool grass, first thing in the morning. It sounds small. It isn’t. It’s a quick reset for an overheated, overstimulated brain.

4. Sit still somewhere green for ten minutes

Not a walk. Just sitting. Somewhere with plants, or trees nearby. Your attention needs a break from screens and traffic and decisions. Green space gives your focus a rest without you having to do anything at all.

5. Time your outdoor moments for early, or late

Early morning and early evening light is softer. Cooler air, calmer light, fewer people. Your body isn’t fighting the heat, so your mind gets to actually enjoy being outside.

6. Listen to birdsong instead of your phone

Natural sound lowers stress hormones. Birdsong especially. Leave the headphones off for a bit. Let your ears do less filtering and more relaxing.

7. Watch clouds, slowly

Lie back. Watch the sky move. It sounds like nothing. But it slows your breathing down without you noticing, and slow breathing is one of the fastest ways to calm an irritable mood.

8. Garden, even just a little

Digging, deadheading, watering. Anything with your hands in soil. Contact with microbes in soil has been shown to naturally lift mood by stimulating serotonin production, and the repetitive motion gives your brain a break from spinning thoughts.

9. Eat outside

Even a sandwich on a bench in the shade. Eating outdoors slows you down. You chew more, rush less, and your nervous system gets the message that it’s allowed to relax.

10. Notice one small thing

A butterfly. A bee on a flower. The smell of warm grass. Noticing pulls your brain out of irritation and into curiosity. You can’t be fully stressed and fully noticing at the same time. Try it and see.

None of these fix the heatwave. But they give your body and your mood somewhere to land when everything feels a bit much.

Pick one to try each day, and see what happens. Let me know which one works best for you 🙂

And remember, when you have the choice, always take the slow road.
